After giving his room key to a friend and returning after curfew to find himself locked out of paddy's palace hostel, mr filbay climbed up the fire escape and on to the roof, a method he had used before when locked out of the hostel. But a cold snap had left a layer of ice on the roof, and mr filbay quickly found himself in trouble. "I just kept sliding off,"He said. "It was really scary, i could feel myself falling. " Mr filbay fell more than 10m to the road below, breaking every bone in his face, knocking out every tooth, breaking his kneecaps and smashing bones in both wrists. He lay unconscious for half an hour before being found. Mr filbay was rushed to hospital in belfast and then taken elsewhere for 14 hours of surgery to rebuild his shattered face. His sister madelaine, 23, flew over to support him during the ordeal. Now recovering and able to walk short distances, mr filbay expected to be discharged from hospital yesterday and will recuperate for several more weeks before flying home.
